Pixel devices have always featured a two-tone back, the Pixel 4 and 4XL kicks the physical fingerprint sensor to the curb on the rear and switches to just face unlock and a sleek back housing a square camera system at the top left corner.

We’ve got the power and it’s not a dull colour anymore. The main body has 3 colour options with a black frame making it a stunning aesthetic point of the device especially for colours Clearly White and Oh So Orange models.

As for sizes, the Pixel 4 measure 147.1 x 68.8 x 8.2mm and weighs 162g, whilst the Pixel 4 XL measures 160.4 x 75.1 x 8.2mm and weighs 193g.

DISPLAY & COLOURS

Rumours were rife and proven accurate about the Pixel 4’s 5.7-inch and the 4 XL’s 6.3-inch display. Both displays offer 90Hz refresh rates like to OnePlus 7 Pro, that make a seamless surfing experience on their OLED screens. Though surfing is great, users are calling out the Pixel 4 for its alleged dim display which Google has responded and promises a software update with fixes on brightness conditions.

Top of the display comes with a range of sensors in a bezel which enable motion gestures and face unlock which means no notch required. The Pixel 4 has a Full HD + resolution for a pixel density of 444ppi and the Pixel 4 XL boasts a Quad HD + resolution for a pixel density of 537ppi. Both have a 19:9 aspect ratio and both support HDR.

On 18 September, a Google ad banner in Time Square confirmed that the Pixel 4 would come in a bright orange colour that would be later named as Oh So Orange alongside Just Black and Clearly White. The ad also displayed the launch date loud and clear, 15 October.

FEATURES & HARDWARE

This new release both features Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 with 6GB of RAM support in both 64GB and 128GB storage capacity. Neither the Pixel 4 nor the Pixel 4 XL offer microSD for storage expansion but they both run on Android 10.

As far as battery capacities go, the Pixel 4 has 2800mAh and the Pixel 4 XL is 3700mAh. Both devices have 18W fast charging and wireless charging support too.

Mobile virtual network operator (MNVO), Google Fi is taking advantage of the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4XL’s Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) feature that allows two different SIM cards to be on “standby” and aware of the state for their respective networks.

Both devices have a physical SIM slot and an eSIM. users would typically have a different network on each SIM so that one can be used for calls and another for data purposes, Flexiroam provides great value starter kits to get you started, available in 150+ countries across 580+ platforms. On Pixel 4, Google is putting both SIMs on the Fi network. As such, users can look for which one is strongest and activate it on the go without interrupting data. Pixel phones can switch between those networks before, but not quite this smoothly.

CAMERA

As per the press image leaks on Twitter 1 October, most had a clear hunch that there would be a square camera system like the iPhone 11 and the bezel at the top of the display.

Performance-wise, Techradar marks the Pixel 4 and 4 XL as one of the very best cameras in the market today. The Pixel 4 has a front camera of 8MP and rear cameras – Dual: 12.2-MP primary wide (ƒ/1.7); 16-MP telephoto with 2x optical zoom (ƒ/2.4).

It has camera UI which encourages users to zoom continuously almost like using a single lens instead of switching between wide and telephoto perspectives. There’s a fuss-free interplay between the optical advantage of that second camera and the moment when the Super Res Zoom kicks in (which works great with hand movement as it brings crisp shots) making it a close rival to the iPhone 11, view some comparison shots here.

PRICE

Pre-order has begun and has also started shipping on 24 October. It is available on all four major carriers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint). The Google Pixel 4 retails for $799 and the Google Pixel 4 XL retails for $899. For an upgrade from 64GB to 128GB, just an additional $100 is would do.

We are certain that this price point does speak of value, but it would be interesting to see how it holds up alongside other competing Android devices and the iPhone.
