Hot and Spicy Korea for You

Korea is a wonderful country that offers various opportunities to tantalise your taste buds. If you are a lover of hot and spicy food, then visiting Korea should definitely be on your list. Here are some of the fieriest and spiciest dishes that we came across while traveling to Korea which you should not miss when you are in the “Land of the Morning Calm.”

Ddukbokki; Rice Cake in Hot Sauce – This spicy treat is prepared with long rice strips blended with carrots, cabbage, sausages and fish cakes, surrounded by a stunningly spicy sauce prepared from Gochu, the Korean red chilli. Other variants of the dish include rice trips prepared with noodles and boiled eggs.

Yangnyeom Tongdak; Fried Chicken – If you thought KFC offers the best fried chicken, this spicy treat will definitely challenge your belief. Incredibly moist and tenderly fried chicken dipped to the core with an outrageously spicy sauce and flavoured with local herbs is undoubtedly the best chicken recipe we have ever tasted.

Japchae; Stir Fried Noodles – If you do not understand the fuss about japchae, you have to taste it yourself to believe. Probably the most popular dish in and out of Korea, sweet potato starch noodles cooked with tender vegetables are served hot seasonal local garnishing to give the dish a distinctive taste. Need we say more?

Spicy Braised Beef Short Beef Ribs – The beef ribs are marinated in a sauce prepared with sesame oil, soy sauce, onion, garlic, dried dates, sugar and ginger. Adequately garnished with gochu, the dish will make you asking for more. Tip – Keep a water bottle close.

Nakji Bokkum; Stir-fried Small Octopus – Relish the tender octopus that is pan fried in a mouth numbing red chilli pepper paste, green onions, green peppers, sesame oil and carrots. Served with rice or noodles, nakji bokkum is probably the spiciest (and tastiest) octopus preparation in the world.

Buldak; Fire Chicken – Perfectly barbequed chicken covered in fiery chilly sauce is a popular delicacy in different pubs all across Korea. Goes best with beer, buldak can be excessively spicy even for people who love spices. Our recommendation – Order the dish with extra cheese to lighten the flavour.
