Black Friday is just one day away. Do you know what exactly is Black Friday? How Black Friday is originated? Why is Black Friday called Black Friday? Here are a few things about Black Friday you may not know about.
What is Black Friday?
Black Friday is the Friday right after Thanksgiving Day, usually the last Friday in November. It is one of the biggest sales event of the year and the most popular shopping holiday of the year (after China’s Double 11 shopping festival). Most retailers would reserve some of their best sales of the year for just this specific day. Meanwhile, shoppers are expected to spend billions on this massive sales day.

In the U.S. specifically, Black Friday usually means the official start of the holiday shopping season, leading to Cyber Monday and then Christmas.
Why is Black Friday called Black Friday?
Initially, this day was called Black Friday because so many people would go out to shop that it caused traffic accidents and even violence.

The Philadelphia Police Department used the term ‘Black Friday‘ internally to describe the chaos surrounding the congestion of traffic and over-crowded sidewalks that required every officer to be on duty to manage the mayhem and to keep order.
The name was first published by Earl Apfelbaum in an advertisement in 1966.
In an effort to create a more positive association with Black Friday, retailers would attempt to associate Black Friday to the Friday after Thanksgiving, using the name to reflect their success and making it a very profitable day.
Since then, Black Friday started being associated to ‘profitable Friday’ to retailers. This meaning stuck and became more popular amongst shoppers than the original negative term.
“If you can’t join ’em, beat ’em.”
